Metallica is an American metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles. The band came together after an ad in a Los Angeles newspaper by drummer Lars Ulrich. The core of the band is drummer Lars Ulrich, vocalist and backing guitarist James Hetfield, and solo guitarist Kirk Hammett. The role of bass guitarist has been replaced by several musicians, currently Robert Trujillo. The band also had a long association with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of the albums from 1990 to 2003 and also helped as interim bassist after Jason Newsted's departure until Trujillo's arrival. Metallica's first albums are characterized by faster song tempos, aggressive and more musically demanding compositions.
